C1: The Contiki Begins (Day Eleven)

Wake Up: 5am.
Date: 8/9/2011
Weather: Rainy
Location: St. Pancras, London, England, Great Britain

Stayed at the Royal National. Not a great place. Sleep was okay but was awake before any good sleep came around. Grabbed some food and met the Contiki group for the start of the journey. The bus left at 6:45am. We arrived in Dover, South East England, just before 11. There the ferry took our bus the 1.5 hrs to the mainland of Europe through North France. Funnily enough, Aimee and Matt`s bus was also on the ferry so we had lunch with them, as well as one of the girls from our Tour, Mel. She is from Sydney and pretty easy going.

Most of the Tour is Australian, with 3 others being from WA. One girl, Tarnee, is the younger sister of a guy from my high school class, which is cool.

About 1pm we leave the ferry for Belgium. We walked around Brussels in the old part for a while, seeing the statues and buildings which make the country so astounding to see. Very beautiful. Dinner was an entreé of fried mussels, main of fish in a tomato and eggplant sauce, dessert of chocolate mousse and a complimentary beer.

After dinner we went to Delirium. This bar sells over 2000 different types of beer. 365 are their own and the rest are imports and whatnot. After a few beers we headed back to the hotel as the start in the morning was early.

Population: 10 Million
Capital: Brussels
Language: Belgian
Known for: Beer, Waffles, Mannekin Pis, Chocolate, Mussels
Sights to note: Atomium, architecture in the old part of the city where the trade union buildings were formed

I am in my mid twenties and fighting my battles to discover who I am and where I fit in to this zany, beautiful world. I was diagnosed with Lupus in in 2008. This takes up most of my focus, as I want to share the experience of trying to live with and rise above chronic invisible illness, so to speak. I would like to stress very much the information regarding medications, medical procedures and illnesses are discussed from my point of view, and with my understanding, colloquialisms and metaphors. I do not attempt to be legally and precisely accurate for the general population, rather I try to be emotionally and descriptively true to my experiences. I hope I can help in understanding others with chronic illness by providing one more personal recount of just how spontaneous and difficult these lives really are. One day I hope to visit every continent, climb some pretty high mountains, sleep in an ice cavern, marry a wonderfully understanding man, have children and teach more children. Mostly, I just want a simple life, you know the house with a husband and kids. Oh, and no pain.
